Grade Six Unit on Media Literacy

A final task for my Grade 6 unit on media will be to create an advertisement. I will have already taught the conventions of advertising and assessed the students' understanding of the elements. They may work in pairs or small groups, depending on the size of the class, and the resources available. I will assess the task in the following areas:

Learning Skills
  • group work
  • focus
  • time management
  • problem solving

Process
  • proposal: students will identify the product they are advertising and how they plan to complete the task
  • teacher conference: to discuss progress and to trouble shoot
  • script/story board: students will be shown exemplars and given a template

Final Product
  • the final product will be presented and evaluated using a rubric which the students helped create. Some criteria would include: the advertisement has a clear message, it uses a catchy slogan or jingle, etc.
reflection: students will reflect on how creating an advertisement helped them interpret the overt and implied messages in advertising

This performance task allows students to include elements which play upon their own strengths. For example, they can include live music or print media texts. Students can present their advertisements live or recorded as a film (maybe too ambitious?) or as a radio advertisement (in which case we would go over how to make sound effects). Using a detailed process would allow me to foresee and deal with any problems.
